Ask the PR Pro: What is messaging?

In public relations, messaging is a combination of the information and tone that executives want to convey when talking about the brand. The brand can be a product, a company or even an executive.

Messaging is used to guide media interviews and generate content, including websites, blogs and news releases.

Since reporters are interested in the 5 Ws (Who, What, Where, When and Why), as well as How, it’s helpful to organize messaging asking those questions: Who are you, What do you do, Why are you important and How are you different.

The language used in messaging sets the tone for how the public will view your brand and can differentiate your brand from competitors.
