Karl Browning, the former commissioner of the Indiana Department of Transportation who has been the chief operating officer of The Schneider Corp. since March 1, has been named president of the family-owned Indianapolis firm.

Browning succeeds David J. Adams, who will remain on the board of the engineering company after guiding it through a turbulent time for the construction industry during the recession.

“Over the past 18 months, we have taken steps to ensure that The Schneider Corp. is profitable and positively positioned,” Adams said. “The time is right to transition to a permanent president to continue the momentum.”

Browning previously was commissioner of INDOT as well as chief information officer of Indiana’s Office of Technology, and his departure from the public sector in 2009 brought a public lament from Gov. Mitch Daniels.

“I did everything I could to keep him as long as I could,” Daniels said at the time. “His legacy will live for generations through record-breaking road building that he has put in motion for Indiana.”
